Since 2006, university students from around the world have converged in Hanksville, UT, USA, each summer at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) to compete in the University Rover Challenge (URC). The competition was organized by the Mars Society to challenge students to design, build, and test next-generation Mars rovers in anticipation of a future where humans and robots work together on the Martian surface.
